Tips for Your Tate House First Look

Are you planning to do a first look on your wedding day? For some couples, the idea of sharing an intimate, emotional moment together before the ceremony feels incredibly special — a chance to pause, soak it all in, and calm those pre-wedding nerves. For others, nothing compares to the anticipation and emotion of seeing each other for the very first time as one walks down the aisle.

The truth is, there’s no right or wrong choice — a first look is completely personal! That said, more photographers and planners are encouraging couples to consider one, especially because wedding day timelines can move quickly and private portrait time can be limited. At Tate House, we absolutely love first looks and the meaningful moments they create throughout our North Georgia wedding venue.

One Tate House couple shared why it was the perfect decision for them:

“We did a first look, figuring A) it would calm our nerves seeing one another and being reminded of how truly special this day was, B) we would have more time to take some amazing photos since Tate House has so many beautiful places on the property, and C) we did not want to keep our guests waiting too long after the ceremony before getting the chance to celebrate. To this day, I do not regret that decision.”

Tips for Your Tate House First Look

Build Time Into Your Wedding Timeline

Your first look deserves more than just a few rushed minutes between events. Work with your planner, coordinator, and photographer to intentionally schedule time for this moment so you can truly enjoy it while also capturing beautiful photos.

Choose Your Location Ahead of Time

One of the things couples love most about Tate House is the variety of stunning backdrops throughout the property. Whether you envision meeting in front of a fountain, beneath the garden greenery, on the grand staircase, or in front of the mansion itself, choosing your location ahead of time helps ensure privacy and allows your photographer to prepare for the perfect shots.

Plan Ahead for Happy Tears

If you think emotions may take over (and they often do!), let your makeup artist know you’re planning a first look. Waterproof mascara is always a good idea, and keeping tissues and lip gloss nearby for touch-ups before the ceremony can make all the difference.

Consider a “First Touch”

Love the intimacy of a first look but still want to save seeing each other for the aisle? A first touch can be the perfect compromise. Standing on opposite sides of a door, wall, or corner allows you to hold hands, exchange private words, pray together, or simply share a quiet moment without actually seeing one another before the ceremony.

First Looks Aren’t Just for Couples

Some of the sweetest reactions happen during first looks with a father, parent, or bridesmaids. While your bridal party may see you during hair and makeup, consider waiting to put on your gown until the final reveal. Those emotional reactions from your closest people are moments you’ll treasure forever — and your photographer will too.
